PORCH ENCLOSURE SONOMA COUNTY

This project was for a porch enclosure in Sonoma County and balcony expansion. The existing home had a beautiful raised patio area that faced south, but it would get so hot in the summertime it was barely usable. The sun would beat down on the patio and reflect up through the windows on that side of the house, causing a lot of unnecessary heat gain. The porch enclosure design provides much-needed respite from the sun, and we also installed Phantom Screens to help turn the enclosure into a "California Room," allowing the area to be used nearly year-round.

Existing Home
The existing home is a beautiful Tuscan-style home, designed by James McCalligan in 2005. However, the southern-facing porch got too hot in the Sonoma sun. The client asked if there was a way to cover the porch to provide more shade and create a space that could be used year-round.

Conceptual Rendering
We developed a plan for the raised patio enclosure design that would enclose the porch and work seamlessly with the existing architecture. This allowed us to re-use the custom steel guardrails already existing on the porch. We worked closely with the Structural Engineer, Roger Hartley, who was integral in developing the details for the structural columns.

Under Construction
During construction, great care was taken by Jon Ballard Construction, to ensure all of the framing came out perfectly. We also incorporated a skylight into the project to allow some light in through the living room window.

Completed Project!
The finished project turned out fantastic and we believe it's a great way to enjoy the indoor/outdoor living style of the Bay Area.

We integrated Phantom Screens into the project, so this shows how the entire space can be enclosed, which can keep the bugs out at night.
